Gesellschaftliche Debatten über Wohnverhältnisse und Wohnungsbau werden inzwischen in weiten Teilen der Welt mit großer Dringlichkeit geführt - womit auch die Frage nach sozialem Wohnungsbau erneut ins Zentrum der öffentlichen Diskussion rückt. Unklar ist allerdings, was eigentlich das Soziale des sozialen Wohnungsbaus ausmachen soll. Dieses Buch will unser Wissen über sozialen Wohnungsbau vermehren und eine Diskussion anstoßen, worauf die Charakterisierung sozial verweist (oder verweisen soll). Es ist eine Einladung zu einer Reise über Kontinente und durch Konzepte, ein Kaleidoskop sozialer, politischer und kultureller Realitäten. 20 kurze Essays beschreiben anhand von Fallstudien aus verschiedenen Ländern das soziale Leben in Sozialwohnungen. Zehn Theoriekapitel reflektieren aus der Perspektive unterschiedlicher Disziplinen die globalen Herausforderungen, zu deren Bewältigung in den Beispielen jeweils lokale Ansätze gefunden werden: Migration und Mobilität, soziale Ungleichheit und soziale Gerechtigkeit, veränderte Haushaltsstrukturen, (Re-)Konstruktionen von Familie, neue Technologien und die Neuverteilung von Care-Aufgaben.

Housing has become a key concern in most parts of todays world, putting social housing again at the centre of public debate. However, it is not clear what the social in social housing actually means. This book sets out to increase our knowledge about social housing and stimulate an ongoing discussion about what the social refers to (or is meant to refer to). The book invites you on a journey across continents and concepts, offering up a kaleidoscope of social, political, and cultural realities. Twenty short essays, based on case studies from around the world, describe and illustrate the social life in social housing. Ten theoretical chapters, written from the perspective of different disciplines, reflect on the global challenges behind the local responses which the cases represent: migration and mobility, issues of social inequality and social justice, changing household patterns, family (re)constructions, new technologies, and care arrangements.
